We are a reference in Orthopedics Veterinary Algarve. Collaborating with colleagues in many veterinary diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic disorders.

The mobility of our animals depends on the musculo-skeletal system. Their quality of life depends on good joint mobility and no pain. watch / a reluctance to exercise, stand or lie down with difficulty, overweight, groans at rest or in motion.

Our Orthopedics consists of:

  1. Prevention of osteo-articular diseases;
  2. Orthopedic surgery;
  3. Physical therapy in the prevention and recovery of orthopedic pathologies.

1. Prevention of osteo-arthritis.

Degenerative joint disease affects from very young animals to older animals. For young people, dogs are more affected than cats, and can detect gait changes from 5-6 months old. Usually the problem is to articulate and the most affected joints are the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee. The appearance of joint problems will depend on inherited genetic characteristics, lifestyle (excessive exercise or weight) and quality of the food.

In choosing a predisposed breed of dog you should be aware:

  • Parents- Get the pedigree of the parents and make sure there is no inbreeding. Preferably you should check if the parents have screening hip dysplasia and elbow. Unfortunately, even fulfilling all requirements, although their occurrence is decreased pup joint disease may develop some hereditary syndromes since they are multifactorial in origin and of great complexity;
  • Lifestyle - The quality of the food and the degree of exercise also affect and influence the development of these diseases. It is extremely important to feed your animal with the most complete and balanced diet possible for the breed, age and activity, since deficiencies or excesses of composition lead to changes in bone development and articulate. Currently, there are high quality food formulated for all types of animals. Also the intensity of exercise is very important in proper development of the skeletal system, in which the exercise during the most intense period of bone growth should be moderate.

In the diagram below, we list the most predisposed breeds and diseases most often associated.

  • Hip Dysplasia - Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd;
  • Elbow Dysplasia - Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Basset Hound, Rottweiler, Bernese Mountain Dog;
  • Shoulder dysplasia - large breeds / giants including the above.

The hip dysplasia can also occur in cats, especially in Persian and Maine Coon breed.

These conditions should be diagnosed as early as possible - after 5-6 months already can detect changes in speed. Your treatment may be conservative or surgical depending on the age at diagnosis, severity of injury, perspectives of the owners and animal welfare. If not diagnosed in time, tend to worsen leading to degenerative joint disease with wear of cartilage and pain. The osteoarthritis is an irreversible process with few therapeutic options.

The osteo-arthritis in adults or elderly is the result of inherited diseases undiagnosed, bad management, growth deformities, ligamentous injuries or traumatic joint injuries involving wear or destruction of the articular surface. Therapeutic success is lower, and these cases a more guarded prognosis. These cases are assessed in collaboration with the animal owners to choose the most beneficial treatment with a view on longevity and quality of life of our patients. Examples of causes of osteo-arthritis in adults / elderly:

  • Torn ligaments (knee, elbow, shoulder, tarsus, wrist, hip);
  • Dislocation of the patella (knee);
  • Overweight;
  • Infectious arthritis (tick fever, leishmaniasis, bacterial, joint trauma);
  • Articular fractures.

In Vilamoura Veterinary Clinic we have methods that slow the advance of these diseases.

2. Orthopaedic Surgery.

The veterinary orthopedic surgery is a highly demanding discipline of veterinary medicine, is the epitome of veterinary orthopedics and is where much bet on the training and competence of our services. The proper functioning of the skeletal system is essential to a good quality of life.

Orthopedic surgery as any surgery performed, is done with the animal under general anesthesia. Since they are usually long surgeries, we are equipped to ensure cardio-respiratory control, constant gas anesthetic maintenance and controlled analgesia. Only in this way we ensure that our patients have a surgery with decreased risks and wake up without pain, which helps to faster and effective anesthetic recovery.

Orthopedic surgery is reserved for:

  • Bone trauma (fractures, tumors);
  • Angular deformities of limbs (skeletal malformations);
  • Joint injuries (sprains, fractures, ruptures of ligaments, tendon rupture, hereditary malformation).

Currently orthopedic implants are constantly evolving in terms of strength, durability and biological preservation of bone nutrition. There are adapted implants for all animals according to weight, lifestyle, age, type of bone pathology. Our protocol includes a consultation where we get a complete history of the condition. We do after a rigorous physical examination with the animal awake and is also necessary under sedation. It is generally also made a radiographic evaluation.

The solution presented by us has to cover all these variants and must be also adjusted to the needs and expectations of the owners.

After surgery, the animal is in recovery room to fully recover the anesthesia. Along with the pet owner, rules are established for a fair and efficient recovery of the area intervened.

In our blog you can see various items with specific orthopedic pathologies.

3. Veterinary Physiotherapy.

The Veterinary Therapy is extremely important both in the conservative treatment of joint diseases, or recovery from orthopedic surgery.
